Lockheed Martin reported on the completion of crucial tests concerning the “Wisła” program, which the American company conducted together with the Polish Armed Forces Group in the United States. To test components of the Patriot strategy for Poland, the hardware-in-the-loop method was used, i.e. a method to test military equipment under simulated combat conditions.
The first combat shooting in Poland from the Vistula strategy at the post in Ustka.
‘A milestone! We ended a demonstration of the hardware-in-the-loop kind with the Polish Armed Group in Texas as part of an offset “Wisła” programme for Poland. Next stop: Poland – where the task will contribute to the improvement of fresh rocket technology" – informed the European branch of Lockheed Martin, a co-producer of the Patriot anti-air defence and rocket defence system.
Hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) refers to a investigating method in which elements of military equipment (e.g. electronics modules, fire control systems, sensors, on-board computers) are connected to the combat field environment simulator alternatively of the actual strategy (e.g. rocket, radar or real purpose). Thanks to this, it is possible to check the operation of the system, including sensor response, guidance algorithms or communication and integration with another systems in the conditions as close to real as possible.
Let us remind that in December 2021, the PGZ concluded agreements with PCO, WZE and PIT-Radwar concerning the creation of modern HWIL laboratory at the Military Electronics Plant in Zielonka. In the facility, devices were installed to simulate the operation of rockets, including specialized gimbal, obtained as part of an offset related to the programme "Wisła". This device will let Polish engineers to simulate overloads during rocket tests, e.g. during launch or maneuvering.
The aim of the Vistula programme is to make a modern mid-range air defence strategy that will combat maneuvering ballistic missiles, self-propelled missiles, aircraft and another means of aerial assault. The first phase of the 2018 program active the acquisition of 2 Patriot batteries with the IBCS command strategy (Integrated conflict Command System). – IBCS is the operating brain of all air defense. Poland is presently the only 1 outside the United States user of this strategy – said defence minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz in September after completed in the mouth of the first fighting shootings of Polish Patriots.
As part of the second phase of the “Wisła” programme, the Polish military is to receive further batteries of American anti-aircraft and anti-missile kits not only with the fresh IBCS command system, but besides with fresh LTAMDS (Lower Tier Air and rocket defence Sensor) radars. In addition, thanks to the offset of Polish companies PGZ (Mesko SA, investigation and improvement Centre Centre of Marine Technology SA, PCO SA, PIT-Radwar SA, Military Electronic Plant SA, Military Aviation Plant No. 1 SA branch in Dęblin, Military Aviation Plant No. 2 SA, Military Communications Plant No. 1 SA, Military Weapons Plant SA) will produce selected components of the Patriot system.
