According to the European Conservative, about 49 000 migrants were transported to Spanish Ceuta within 24 hours and at least 18 people were killed. The crisis overloaded the tiny enclave and again exposed the weakness of European border protection.
Enclave under utmost pressure
"European Conservative" stated that in 1 day the Ceuta border exceeded about 49 000 migrants. specified a large influx was to overload a tiny Spanish territory in North Africa. According to the same source, at least 18 people lost their lives.
Tragic balance requires seriousness. People are besides dying on migration routes due to the fact that European policy has been sending conflicting signals over the years: the formal ban on illegal border crossings has been linked to the real possible of remaining after reaching the EU.
Border is simply a state institution
The Italian authorities were to endanger the restoration of border controls. This reaction shows the basic truth: erstwhile external borders fail, states begin to defend their own territory. The costs are borne by residents, services, local governments and legally travelling Europeans.
Protecting the border is not an act of hostility towards man. It is simply a condition of legal order. The state must know who enters, on what basis and whether it poses a threat. Only a controlled strategy allows effective assistance to persons who are truly entitled to protection.
Lesson for Poland
For Poland, the crisis in Ceuta means force on the full Schengen area, the anticipation of secondary flows and subsequent requests for relocation. Warsaw should clearly defend the right to control its own borders and reject mechanisms that divide the effects of another people's decisions between all countries. Sovereignty begins at the border. Without it, European solidarity becomes a bill to citizens.
