The subject of Tuesday's debate was economical and geopolitical implications for transatlantic relations after Donald Trump took over power. Anders Vistisen addressed the American president straight in English.
— Dear president Trump, perceive very carefully. Greenland has been part of the Danish kingdom for 800 years. It is an integral part of our country. It's not for sale. Let me put it with words that may be understandable to you: Mr. Trump, get off my back.
In the remainder of his speech, Vistisen besides criticised Greenland's ideas of independence, arguing that they were “unrealistic” and a origin of concern for both the island residents and the full Danish kingdom. The MEP pointed out the shortcomings in Greenland's independency in the areas of justice, police or wellness care and called independency rhetoric "unacceptable".
Vistisen's reaction was a consequence to Trump's earlier statements, which did not regulation out the usage of force or economical force to convince Denmark to sale Greenland. Meanwhile, Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede stressed that it is the island's people who should decide on its future, making it clear that Greenlandians do not want to become Americans.
