Dulkiewicz returns to construction of the aquarium in Gdańsk

“Nautilus is simply a very advanced task and I hope that shortly we will besides be able to cut the ribbon and dedicate ourselves to saving endangered species,” said president Gdańsk, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, at his electoral convention, who is seeking re-election. At the Gdańsk Exhibition and legislature Centre “Amber Expo” there were sympathizers and supporters of Aleksandra Dulkiewicz. Dulkiewicz goes to the elections with support not only of the local association “Everything for Gdańsk”, but besides of the nationwide Civic Coalition.

It is worth noting that this is not a fresh idea. It is simply a return to plans inactive in the days of Paweł Adamowicz, tragically deceased president of Gdańsk. The agreement for the task was terminated – the decision to discontinue the investment was translated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

– This kind of object is not built alone. However, the company that accompanied us is incapable to proceed the project," says Izabela Kozicka-Prus from Gdańsk Magistrate.

What was the aquarium expected to be?

The Nautilus Oceanarium Gdańsk was to be enrolled as 1 of the largest recreational and educational complexes in Poland and even in Europe. The announcement indicated that it would cover an area of over 50,000 m2, becoming an icon of modernity and ecological education. It was planned that the heart of the investment would be an oceanarium with rich fauna and flora of South America. The next stages were to bring attractions specified as exotic lagoon, hotel and medical gallery.

The advanced complex was planned to be equipped with a multimedia aquarium, exotic lagoon, a planet of virtual reality, a hotel with conference facilities and a medical gallery. The offer was besides to include various catering and commercial facilities.

Expectations for this investment were enormous. The Oceanarium was to present unique marine species from South America and Exotic Laguna to offer a complex of swimming pools and saunas on an area of 6000 m2. A penguinarium, 5D caves, interactive learning center and four-star hotel with full facilities were besides planned.

The task was implemented by the PFI Future Consortium and Arena Gdańsk as part of a public-private partnership. The construction, planned after the selection of the contractor in 2017 and the signing of the contract in April 2018, was part of the larger revitalization task "Letnica 3.0". The estimated investment cost was PLN 450 million.

Unfortunately, despite large hopes and announcements, this promise remained unfulfilled. Planned as an architectural pearl and educational complex Nautilus Gdańsk, it was intended to attract attention not only to the inhabitants of the city, but besides to tourists from all over Europe. Its failure leaves questions and disappointment, while stressing the importance of making promises for the improvement and image of the city.

Oceanarium in Gdańsk. PLN 450 million for investment

The Nautilus Oceanarium, which was to flourish in the vicinity of Polsat Plus Arena Gdańsk, was the object of large hopes and expectations. The planned implementation of this investment as part of the public-private partnership, under the aegis of the PFI Future Consortium and Arena Gdańsk, was enthusiastic. The decision to choice the contractor, which followed the competition decided in 2017, and the conclusion of the contract in April 2018, marked the beginning of a fresh chapter in the past of the summertime district, known as the "Letnica 3.0" project. This initiative was intended to contribute to further revitalization and increase the attractiveness of the area, and the estimated investment cost of PLN 450 million proved its scale and ambition.

The Nautilus Gdańsk complex promised not only fresh recreational and educational opportunities for residents and tourists, but besides to stand as a symbol of modern architecture. His project, announcing a squad of buildings of unique design, was to constitute another step towards modernization of Gdańsk and its tourist offer.

However, despite announcements and plans, this visionary task has not been implemented. deficiency of advancement in the construction of the oceanarium and the Nautilus aquapark leaves a shortcoming and questions about the future of planned initiatives in the region. This is simply a reminder of the importance not only of large visions, but besides of their effective implementation, so that they do not stay solely on paper.
