Frozen Russian assets: A powerful financial injection for Ukraine

In February 2022, the western countries froze almost half of Moscow's currency reserves, which represents around EUR 300 billion. Of this amount, around EUR 200 billion is in the European Union, mainly at Euroclear, an global financial institution based in Brussels that specialises in handling transactions in capital markets.

Second instalment of aid already in April

European Minister Adam Sz Trapka informed on 11 February at the European Parliament gathering in Strasbourg that a second tranche of gross generated from frozen Russian assets of EUR 1.9 billion would be paid Ukraine already in April. This is another step towards real support for Ukraine in its fight for independence.

Baltic Sentry: fresh mission to defend European borders

At the Helsinki Summit on 13 January, leaders of Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland, and the NATO chief announced the establishment of a fresh Baltic Sentra mission (Baltic Guard).
