Bulgaria refused to sale Ukraine 2 Russian atomic reactors to be utilized to complete the construction of blocks 3 and 4 of the Chmielnicki atomic Power Plant (KNPP).
The refusal to sale reactors was expressed by Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirow, arguing that they arenecessary for the improvement of atomic power in Bulgaria due to the global increase in electricity prices.
Zafirov added that this is simply a joint decision of the ruling coalition. However, it inactive needs to be yet approved by Parliament. This is most likely why the Ukrainian energy ministry stated that "it has not yet received the authoritative position of the Bulgarian government on this issue".
Previously, the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy stressed that the expansion of the Chmielnicki atomic power plant is essential to compensate for the failure of power due to the seizure of the Zaporozhye atomic power plant by the Russians, and the acquisition of reactors from Bulgaria “will be many times cheaper and faster than the construction of the atomic power plant from scratch” as KNPP blocks were designed for VVER-1000 reactors, Russian production. Apart from Russia, only Bulgaria has specified reactors. Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenski has besides repeatedly supported the completion of the construction of KNPP and the acquisition of power blocks from Bulgaria.
Meanwhile, Boyko Borisov, leader of the largest Bulgarian organization in the parliament, GERB (Citizens for the European improvement of Bulgaria), said that the country should effort to usage 2 reactors to plan data centers, along with the US and large Britain, before agreeing to sale them to Ukraine.
Borisov explained that "representatives of 3 large global funds", who are curious in building data centres, contacted Bulgaria and asked her to abstain from the decision to sale Ukrainian reactors and first "talk to US president Donald Trump".
