Will abortion in Britain halt being a crime?

There is simply a serious debate in Britain about the future of protecting the lives of unborn children. The home of Commons voted on a proposal that could lead to the complete abolition of criminal liability for abortion – even to the last day of pregnancy. This is simply a major step toward an even greater approval to take the lives of helpless children in the womb.

Alithea Williams of the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Children (SPUC) is not concerned:

"We are terrified that Members voted in favour of this utmost and barbarous proposal. If this clause comes into force, the female who will abortion at any time of pregnancy, even just before childbirth, will not commit a crime.”

Williams notes that there is already a very liberal abortion law in the UK that allows about 300,000 unborn children to be killed all year. The fresh proposal even removes the minimum restrictions that have existed so far. In her opinion, this is the consequence of the actions of the abortion lobby, which previously led to, among others, the anticipation of pharmacological abortion without the supervision of a doctor – by sending the tablets by post.

"The cases of women who are being prosecuted for abortion, whose number reaches only a few, are the consequence of the policy that the lobby has been pushing – sending abortion pills to women by post without having to appear in a medical facility"

– he says. It besides adds that this amendment was passed without a real debate and was not part of the authoritative government agenda.

Importantly, most of the British do not support specified extremist changes. According to fresh studies, as many as 62% of the UK population believe that illegal abortion should stay a crime – in the interests of both unborn children and women in hard situations.

Life defenders now appeal to the home of Lords not to let a fresh provision to enter into force.

"We will never accept a law that puts women in danger and deprives unborn children of all rights"

“Alithea Williams points out.

The Catholic Church besides spoke on this issue. Archbishop John Sherrington, liable for life defence issues in the episcopal of England and Wales, stressed that Parliament's decision raises serious concerns.

"Our concern stems from our compassion for both mothers and unborn children"

– he noted.

Hierarch highlighted another problem – women can be even more exposed to coercion, manipulation and loneliness in deciding about abortion. "Abortion is frequently chosen due to individual problems faced by a woman, as well as deficiency of adequate support and advice. Adopting a fresh clause will make women more lonely, susceptible and isolated," the archbishop warns.

Every life has an invaluable value – from conception to natural death. On behalf of the community of believers, Archbishop Sherrington ensures:

"We will not leave pregnant women and their unborn children at the most hard minute of their lives. I thank all those in and outside the Church who share this commitment and proceed to service parents in request and their children. Let us proceed prayer and entrust the lives of these women, children, their families and all those who support them, the care of Our Lady."
