German police secured on September 4, 4 unknown explosive or incendiary devices at 2 transformer stations in Saxony, in the Görlitz and Budziszyn area. They were disarmed and the investigators had not yet determined who planted them. For Poland this is simply a warning: critical infrastructure close our border remains a real mark of sabotage.
Four objects in 2 places
Saxon Home Secretary Armin Schuster reported that officers secured 4 facilities in 2 locations. They were located close transformer stations. The German services began searching after receiving a letter, which the author admitted to earlier attacks. On 4 September, the equipment was disabled.
Görlitz police confirmed a large operation north of Budziszyn. According to the German media, actions were carried out, among others, in the forest close Schleife, close to the Saxony-Brandenburg border. The exact locations and construction of the items found were not then publically described. It's the right precaution. Bomb squads and evidence have precedence on explosives, not media rush.
Energy network hit series
Findings in Saxony are not an isolated incident. Previously, there were actions aimed at transformer stations in Jänschwalde, Brandenburg and Bergheim, North Rhine-Westphalia. Suspected devices were besides discovered in Dormagen and Weisweiler. One of these attempts of sabotage we have already described in the context of the station in Dormagen.
Investigators are looking for a series of 48-year-old men from North Rhine-Westphalia. The German services considered 2 letters of admission authentic and conducted a European search. The procedure itself is ongoing. The fishy has not been convicted, and the work for the devices found in Saxony must not be attributed without the result of the investigation.
This precision is peculiarly crucial erstwhile sabotage immediately triggers questions about abroad service and hybrid war. Europe knows akin operations, but a circumstantial case must be settled on the basis of evidence. Alarmism without facts helps the perpetrators of chaos due to the fact that it spreads fear faster than the truth.
What it means for Poland
Görlitz lies straight on Zgorzelec. The failure or deliberate exclusion of the elements of the network on the German side may hit the transport, industry, communications and life of the inhabitants of the full border. The state border does not halt the effects of a major energy failure. so return of strategical infrastructure under real state control is not an economical detail, but part of national security.
Polish services should draw a simple conclusion from the German series. The protection of transformers, transmission lines, railway nodes and control systems requires constant recognition, cooperation with operators and ready-to-use repair procedures. It's not adequate to respond after the explosion. opposition is built earlier, besides through equipment supplies and the ability to rapidly reconstruct power supply.
A country that neglects its own networks exposes citizens and the economy to blackmail. Poland cannot wait for another series of sabotage to cross Nysa Lusatia. Light in the homes, continuity of production and freedom of action of the state in crisis are at stake.
