In France, there was confusion around the Masonian lodge "Abbé Suger", operating in the structures of the Grand Loge Nationale Française, the only Obedition in France recognized by London (the large United Lodge of England). According to press reports, among its members or persons associated with it, there are to be politicians and sympathizers of the National Assembly (Rassemblement National), a group associated with Marine Le Pen. This information is described in the French diary L’Humanité, and then picked up the media, among others in Poland.
The case sparked a discussion due to the fact that any Masonic communities declare apolitical and distance to organization disputes. According to media coverage, obedition management announced an analysis of the situation of this peculiar lodge.
Commentators point out that akin tensions are not new: elite or ideological organisations frequently face the question of whether membership of politically active persons affects their image and interior balance. In this case, the dispute concerns primarily the boundaries of political pluralism, the reputation of the institution and the relation between the private engagement of members and the authoritative position of the organisation.
