Councilman Majewski calls for peace in public debate

– We condemn all force and threat in public life – he tells the portal wbiamszpile.pl, Przemysław Majewski. The message of the opposition councilman and organizer of the Friday protest “Dulkiewicz to resign” is simply a reaction to the fresh entry of the president of Gdańsk, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, who pointed out the scale of hatred in Polish public life. In his appeal, Councilman Majewski stressed the request to keep a balance between freedom of speech and work for the content.

Majewski: “Freedom of the word requires responsibility”

Councillor PiS Przemysław Majewski made a clear message:

We condemn all force and threat in public life. Freedom of speech is simply a large value, but it must be accompanied by work for the content.

In his opinion, the foundation of a democratic strategy is the right to express its views peacefully and the anticipation to criticize power, especially erstwhile it is inept.

The councilman via the portal appealed to the residents for peace and consideration during the Friday demonstration.

We call on everyone to show peacefully, and for power to guarantee security, appropriate reactions to provokers, but besides respect for freedom of speech and gatherings," he stressed.

Majewski made it clear that although differences of opinion are natural, it should lead to a conversation, not to escalation of aggression.

A increasing Wave of Hate: Dulkiewicz about individual Experience

Alexander Dulkiewicz, president of Gdańsk, besides referred to the problem of hatred speech. In a moving entry on social media, she recalled tragic events from years ago, which, in her opinion, did not teach Poles greater work for words.

Did events six years ago teach us anything? Seeing akin entries, I feel that I did not... – she wrote.

Dulkiewicz drew attention to the fresh wave of hatred that hit the large Orchestra of Christmas Charity and Jurek Owsiak. She pointed out that verbal aggression besides affects her personally, including her loved ones.

Today, too, individual wishes me dead. How much more has to happen? Does another hatred run gotta end with someone's death, so that we can yet say "enough"?

Dulkiewicz stressed that hatred speech is not just words – it is simply a tool that hurts and destroys social ties.

Words have large power – they can build bonds and unite people. They can besides destroy, leaving behind a void that nothing will always be able to fill," she added.

Hate speech on both sides

Although both Councillor Majewski and Dulkiewicz emphasize the importance of fighting hatred speech, the problem remains complex. Among the supporters of the president of Gdańsk there are many examples of verbal aggression against its political opponents. The speech of hatred seems to be a problem that has no political colors.

Will politicians find a way to break this dangerous spiral? The work for the words mentioned by Majewski seems crucial, but must be enforced after each organization to the public debate.
