Fewer and less immigrants come to Germany. We know the reason

Fewer and less migrants are arriving in Germany, according to statistics. Germany besides becomes little attractive in the EU.


Less refugees and immigrants, but the number of people leaving Germany remains the same. Germany has reported a fall in the migration balance for another year in a row.

In 2024 about 430 1000 more people arrived in Germany than they emigrated – stated the national Statistical Office in Wiesbaden on Tuesday (24.06.2025). A year earlier, the migration balance was around 663 000 and almost 1.5 million people reached 2022.

Less Syrian immigrants, Turkey, Afghanistan


According to statistics, 1.69 million people came to Germany last year and 1.26 million people left Germany. Compared to 2023, the number of arrivals decreased by 12% and the number of departures remained almost unchanged.


One reason for the reduced migration balance was the decline in immigration from the main countries of origin of asylum seekers in Germany. There were 25 percent less people from Syria than in 2023. A crucial decline was besides recorded from Turkey and Afghanistan – 53 and 32 percent respectively.

At a constant level of around 121,000 people, the migration balance from Ukraine remained, with a corresponding decrease in both arrivals and departures.

EU migration balance negative


Another reason for the decline in the balance of migration is the continuing decline in immigration from the EU countries, says the German Statistical Office. For the first time since 2008, more people have moved from Germany to another EU countries than from these countries to Germany. The balance of migration last year was so negative and amounted to 34 000 - so much more people left Germany for another EU country than the other.

The biggest decrease afraid Poland, Bulgaria and Romania – 21, 18 and 8 percent respectively. There were 22,000 less arrivals from Poland than in 2023. The balance of migration with Poland was so negative and amounted to negative 11 thousand. A year earlier, 15 1000 more people came to Germany than they left Germany for Poland.

Migration inside Germany


The statistic besides analysed migration movements within Germany. Last year, the biggest increase in migration was recorded by Brandenburg (an increase of 12 1000 people). Next in order were Bavaria and Schleswig-Holstein.


The biggest migration losses were recorded by Berlin, from which more than 15,000 people came. The losses were besides noted by Thuringia, Hessen and North Rhine-Westphalia.
