On the night of Thursday to Friday, the Russian strike drone hit a sarcophagus over a Chernobyl atomic reactor destroyed in the 1986 disaster. The event was reported by the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenski, in his entry on the X portal.
Zelenski reported that the blast drone with explosive device hit the sarcophagus, which protects the planet from radiation destroyed block 4 of the Chernobyl atomic power plant. A fire broke out as a consequence of the impact, but it was extinguished. Zelenski emphasized that the harm to the sarcophagus is crucial and the radiation level is constantly controlled.
The global Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that a drone struck a sarcophagus on Thursday night on Friday, securing the remains of reactor No. 4, destroyed in the 1986 crash. The CEO of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, reported that the Chernobyl incidental and the fresh increase in military activity around the Zaporoska atomic Power Plant in Enerhodar in the south of Ukraine attest to persistent threats to atomic safety.
The disaster at the Chernobyl atomic power plant took place on April 26, 1986. The detonation of the 4th gym reactor resulted in contamination of parts of the territories of Ukraine and Belarus. Radioactive substances besides reached Scandinavia, Central Europe, including Poland, and the south of the continent – Greece and Italy. Currently, the 4th block reactor is covered with safety features, called the “sarcophagus” and “the Ark”. The power plant stopped producing energy in 2000.
In Poland, the Chernobyl disaster had crucial consequences. Radioactive substances reached Poland, especially in the south of the country. The radiation level was advanced adequate that the Polish government had to take safety measures, specified as evacuation of residents from threatened areas. The Chernobyl disaster was 1 of the biggest ecological disasters in Poland's history.
The Russian strike drone, which hit the sarcophagus in Chernobyl, is simply a threat to atomic safety. Zelenski stressed that Russia is the only country in the planet to attack specified facilities, occupy the territory of atomic power plants and carry out war activities regardless of the consequences. Russia is simply a terrorist threat to the world.
It is worth noting that the Chernobyl disaster had crucial environmental consequences. Radioactive substances have reached soil, water and air, causing permanent contamination. The Chernobyl disaster was 1 of the largest ecological disasters in planet history.
The global Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported that the level of radiation inside and outside the sarcophagus remains average and stable. No casualties were reported as a consequence of the Chernobyl incident. The IAEA shall guarantee that it monitors the situation and conduct analyses to guarantee atomic safety.
In connection with the Chernobyl incident, Zelenski called for increased safety around atomic power plants in Ukraine. The president of Ukraine stressed that Russia must halt fighting around atomic power plants and comply with global atomic safety standards. Zelenski pointed out that atomic safety is simply a precedence for Ukraine and the full world.
