Ukrainian police detained on 28 August 4 employees of the office of pathomorphology in Chernivtsi, suspected of illegally downloading and selling tissues of the deceased. Investigators have conducted 18 searches. The material was to be sent to bioimpliers producers, and the case concerns a violation of the rules of transplantation and exploitation of grieving families.
Four persons concerned
Among the suspects are the head of the Chernivtsi Oblast Office of Pathology and Anatomy, 2 pathomorphologists and a laboratory. The police of the region of Czerniowiecki gavethat on 28 August 18 searches were carried out in apartments, cars and business premises. All 4 were charged with violating the statutory transplantation mode of anatomical materials.
Tissues were expected to go to implant manufacturers.
According to forensic findings, skin, bones, tendons and corneas were collected from the bodies. The materials were transferred to companies producing bioimplants for surgery and dentistry. The office did not have the required approval to execute transplant operations, and the suspects were to usage the hard situation of their loved ones erstwhile obtaining permission, offering them free services, including embalming.
The investigation is ongoing. The police find the degree of the harm and check whether further persons were involved. The court filed a motion to apply to suspected arrests. Until a final decision is taken, they shall benefit from the presumption of innocence.
