On a global scale, Russia is unique in the ratio of military spending to GDP. Most NATO countries spend on defence on an average of 2-3% of their GDP, Russia maintains a level exceeding 6%. By comparison, Germany – inactive considered 1 of Europe's most powerful economies – spends little than 2% of GDP on the army and France about 2.3%. This means that in Russia almost twice as much of the national income goes to the military compared to the main Western countries.
