The European Commission approved EUR 6.1 billion on 24 August for air and rocket defence systems, rockets, ammunition and radars for Ukraine. The decision was announced on the 35th anniversary of Ukrainian independence. For Poland this means 1 thing: to aid Kiev must go along with hard guarding our security.
Brussels announces money on Ukrainian holiday
The European Commission announced another tranche of military support for Kiev at a symbolic time. On August 24, Ukraine celebrates the 35th anniversary of the declaration of independence, and European leaders arrived in Kiev, including European Council president António Costa, Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Moldovan president Maia Sandu and Estonian president Alar Karis. According to British media coverage in Kiev, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham besides appeared.
According to The Guardian, Ursula von der Leyen reported that the European Union approved EUR 6.1 billion of military aid for Ukraine. The money is intended for air defence and rocket defense, rockets, ammunition and radar. This is not a ceremonial gesture. It responds to real force from Russian strikes, especially rocket and drone.
The War of Russia and the Interest of Poland
Poland has a clear national interest in this matter. Russia cannot win the war and push its force closer to our borders. Aid to a state fighting Moscow is rational if it strengthens the safety of the region and does not take place at the expense of the Polish shield, the Polish army and Polish taxpayers without control.
The most crucial question for Warsaw begins here. Brussels likes to present large packages as proof of its own cause, but the European defence policy bill is paid by national states. Poland cannot be simply a logistical base and a political contractor of decisions taken elsewhere. It has the right to require that each tranche of aid be combined with the restoration of its own capacities.
The National diary has already written that Ukraine wants to spend EU billions to defend heaven. Today's decision confirms direction: missile, radar and interception systems are the priority. It's reasonable, due to the fact that without air defense, power stations and industrial plants stay hostages to Russian volleys.
EU billions, national accounts
The European Commission website on support for Ukraine states that the Ukrainian Support debt instrument provides for up to EUR 90 billion of aid, of which EUR 60 billion is intended to strengthen the defence and defence industries of Ukraine, and EUR 30 billion is intended to strengthen the functioning of the state. For 2026, the Council Decision provides for up to EUR 45 billion, including EUR 28.3 billion for defence and industrial capacity.
This is simply a scale that must not be covered by the language of solidarity alone. If money goes mainly through European mechanisms, the Polish government is obliged to defender the participation of Polish industry, Polish logistics companies and Polish safety interests. Otherwise, a well-known model will be created: hazard on the east flank, profits in the old capitals of the Union, and Warsaw is only to nod.
Leaders in Kiev and a signal for Moscow
The presence of European leaders in Kiev is of political importance. Russia is to see that Ukraine does not stay alone on its own day of independence. This is simply a signal needed, due to the fact that the Kremlin understands the cost, strength and consistency. Words without deliveries are empty. Supply without strategy is besides weak.
According to media coverage, Andy Burnham is to announce support for the French-Ukrainian work on the local production of SCAPP/Storm Shadow missiles. This is another component of the same puzzle: Kiev is not only to receive weapons, but to gradually build its own production. For Poland it is simply a lesson brutally simple. A country that does not have its own ammunition, its own supplies and its own manufacture is waiting in line in the crisis.
Therefore, in the dispute over Patriots for Ukraine Polish consequence must be tough: first full safety of the Polish sky, then assistance within the framework of real opportunities and guarantees of allies. relationship between nations does not relieve the government in Warsaw of its first work towards Poles.
Solidarity yes, dictatorship no
There is no contradiction between Ukraine's support against Russia and opposition to the Brussels impulse of centralisation. The Polish right should be able to say both at once: Moscow is simply a threat and Brussels does not own the Polish state's right. If you don't understand, you confuse realism with subjection.
Today's €6.1 billion can truly strengthen Ukrainian defence against missiles and drones. Good. But Warsaw must ask cold questions: how much of this strengthens the Polish flank, how much it returns to manufacture in our region, how much it relieves our stocks and how much the European Commission's political capital is building.
