Due to illegal migration, more and more people in Poland are in favour of introducing border controls between Poland and Germany. According to the latest IBRiS survey commissioned by Radio ZET, 62% of respondents support this solution.
This is simply a clearly polarising subject for the public, especially depending on political preferences. The top support for border controls was recorded among Confederate voters, where 89% of respondents advocate this solution. Only 10% of Sławomir Mentzen's supporters argue the introduction of border controls.
Among the sympathizers of Law and Justice, a akin approach is declared by 85% of respondents, with only 4% opposed to specified a step. It is hard to say that 11 percent of respondents from this group responded. Third-way voters besides are mostly “for” – 61 percent of them advocate border controls, while 39 percent are against.
In the case of the Citizen Coalition, border control supports 54 percent of the survey participants, it is opposed by 35 percent and 11 percent have no opinion. A completely different situation exists for fresh Left supporters. In this group the opponents of the introduction of controls dominate – as many as 68% of respondents. There are 32 percent supporters, and no of the respondents chose the answer "it's hard to say".
The IBRiS survey was carried out on 4–5 April 2025, by computer assisted telephone interviews (CATI), on a typical example of 1068 people. The results show that border controls are an increasingly popular solution among Poles, especially among right-wing organization voters.
According to the data of the Office for Foreigners, in 2022 more than 1.3 million foreigners entered Poland, of which more than 70% came from Ukraine. In 2023, however, this figure increased to over 1.5 million, of which more than 60% came from Ukraine.
It is worth noting that border checks are not a fresh thought in Poland. In 2015, due to the migration crisis, Poland introduced border controls with Germany, Czech Republic and Slovakia. These checks were carried out by the Border defender and the Police.
Currently, Poland is 1 of the most safe countries in the European Union, with a low crime rate. According to the Police office data, in 2022, the crime rate in Poland was 0.54%, meaning that 54 crimes were committed per 100,000 inhabitants.
In view of the above data, border controls can be an effective solution in the fight against illegal migration and crime. However, human rights and civilian liberties must not be forgotten, which must be respected erstwhile specified solutions are introduced.
It is worth noting that border controls may besides have a affirmative impact on the Polish economy. According to the data of the Central Statistical Office, in 2022 Poland's exports amounted to over PLN 1.1 trillion, of which more than 70% went to the European Union.
Therefore, border controls can be an effective solution in the fight against illegal migration and crime, as well as beneficial to the Polish economy. However, human rights and civilian liberties must not be forgotten, which must be respected erstwhile specified solutions are introduced.
In order to guarantee safety and order in Poland, border checks should be carried out in a structured and transparent manner. It is worth noting that Poland is 1 of the most safe countries in the European Union, with a low crime rate.
In summary, border controls are an increasingly popular solution among Poles, especially among right-wing organization voters. It is worth noting that border controls can be an effective solution in the fight against illegal migration and crime, as well as beneficial to the Polish economy.
