Big tech versus media. It's all in the hands of the Senate

No 1 would know about them, no 1 would hear them, see them and compose about them. Today, with their hands full of feathers and posts, they are deaf to media calls. Media that demands what they deserve: so that they are not robbed of copyright, so that they simply pay honestly for utilizing their works on the Internet. Just so it's not like the media makes large techs like Google or Facebook, and the ones that make the product and deliver it to the market, they get bones from your table.

A large protest of Polish media – an appeal to politicians – under the motto “Politicians! Don't kill Polish media" spread widely and went under the roof. More than 350 Polish media participated in the protest on 4 July. The dominance of global technological giants threatens the existence of average and tiny media. I remember the slogan "Little is Beautiful". It besides works on the media market, due to the fact that it guarantees pluralism of content, diversity of transmission, reaching the local audience and perpetuates the principles of democracy. On the 1 hand, and on the another hand, global media corporations usage content published in Polish media free of charge and impunity, posting advertising on them and transferring profits abroad. Polish media expected politicians to support in the fight against media giants with royalties and compensation for parasitising their content, but they mostly did not receive this support.

The full point of this protest is that the Sejm adopted an amendment to the Law on Copyright and Related Rights in the Digital Market, but did not introduce regulations and amendments (reported by the Left), which would let Polish media to effectively account for digital platforms. The EU Directive requires that alleged large techniques share advertising revenues with content creators as a consequence of negotiations with the media. The media would like you to specify the principles of these negotiations. In short, Google and Facebook – giants who usage media content – should pay for these content, not extend negotiations freely. Poland has not implemented this directive for many years, and the government has proposed in the Act that the media deal with giants themselves. According to the publishers, it lacked an appeal body (as proposed by the publishers it would be the Office for Competition and Consumer Protection), and it is known what kind of bargaining position the local diary might have towards Facebook. It's going to be like the large one, and possibly the small one... In fact, it is about sharing immense profits. It is characteristic that the information run of Polish media blocked Facebook on 4 July. Posts and social media websites about this protest were blocked.

This week's amended bill will be handled by the Senate. In the probe on the TOK FM website, the media appeal supported 70 percent of users, but interest in the subject was limited. In the margins of this protest, I would like to see publishers more curious in the future of journalists who are increasingly being replaced by artificial intelligence. SI organizes pages, writes announcements, articles and news, and selects pictures and slow begins to displace “human” journalists in any editorials. Readers rightly believe that news and articles written by the SI should at least be marked as artificial intelligence, preferably if they were not at all. If present we rightly request that large techs respect copyright, we should besides request that journalists respect the rights of journalists and hold their jobs, due to the fact that without them there will be no human media!
