The national Government in Berlin expressed its dissatisfaction with the actions of the Polish authorities, which did not detain a man suspected of participating in the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipeline. Germany suspects that Poland may have even warned Volodymyr Z., the main fishy in this case.

Some time ago, the “Wall Street Journal” (“WSJ”), through its European political correspondent Bojan Pancevski, described the complex operation of blowing up Nord Stream gas pipelines, pointing to the engagement of Ukrainian saboteurs.

Poland as a logistics base

According to the report, “WSJ”, Ukrainian saboteurs tried to establish cooperation with the Polish authorities, but without success. Nevertheless, they utilized Poland as a logistics base and stopped at the Polish port of Kołobrzeg. A port individual spotted the suspicious behaviour of the yacht crew and notified the police. The Polish Border defender carried out a check, verifying the identity of the crew who presented passports cEuropean Union gold. People acquainted with the investigation claim that despite suspicions, the crew were allowed to proceed their journey north, where they allegedly set up the remainder of the mines.

Controversy around surveillance recordings

Although the full port of Kołobrzeg was under close video surveillance, the Polish authorities refused to transmit the recordings of port monitoring to their German counterparts, arguing that the recordings were routinely destroyed shortly after the departure of the yacht Andromeda. The Polish Agency for interior safety (ABW) confirmed ‘WSJ’ that specified recordings do not exist.

Lack of action of Polish authorities

At the end of last week, the Polish prosecution informed the German authorities that Volodymyr Z., suspected of attacking Nord Stream, had left Poland. The Polish website asked the Germans if they were curious in searching his home close Warsaw by the Polish authorities. However, the Polish services did not comply with the European detention order, which was faced with harsh criticism from Germany.

The German magazine “Der Spiegel” reported that the government of Germany is “aggressive” for Warsaw and will not forget it. "Polish authorities failed to comply with the legal work to arrest the wanted. It's an different confrontation. A man managed to flee to his country. The Polish authorities could even inform the Ukrainian” – the article says.

Germany suspects Poland to inform the suspect

According to information obtained by the German media, sources akin to the safety services propose that the Polish prosecution signalled to the Germans the readiness to immediately arrest Volodymyr Z., as required by EU law. However, no of this happened. On the contrary, during the Polish-German government consultations in early July, Germany has learned that Poles are not curious in cooperation. Berlin suspects that Warsaw may have warned the wanted one. “There are rumors in the spheres of the German authorities that Polish officials said: Why should we arrest him? He is simply a hero for us!” – you can read in the article.

Reactions and controversy

Both the deficiency of arrest and the alleged informing of the fishy by Poland caused controversy in the global arena. Cooperation between Poland and Germany on safety and justice has always been close, but fresh events may affect future relations between these countries. Time will show how the situation will make and what further steps will be taken by both governments.

Summary

Controversy about Poland's failure to halt the suspected Nord Stream gas pipeline blowing up caused serious tensions between Poland and Germany. Both parties have different interpretations of the situation, which could affect future diplomatic relations. Poland inactive maintains that it acted in accordance with the applicable law, while Germany expects more decisive action from the Polish authorities.
