U.S. president Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he had an interview with Russian president Vladimir Putin. He stressed that both leaders wanted to prevent further victims of the war between Russia and Ukraine. Therefore, they decided to start peace negotiations immediately.
Barack Obama Diploma points out Donald Trump's mistakes
Michael McFaul, erstwhile US Ambassador to Russia in the Barack Obama administration, questioned Trump's strategy towards Russia and Ukraine before forthcoming negotiations.
"Why does the Trump administration give Putin presents, Ukrainian land and Ukraine's deficiency of NATO membership, even before negotiations begin? I was negotiating with the Russians. They are never given anything for free," he wrote on the X McFaul portal.
As the diplomat added, Trump and his squad should offer concessions to the Russians in exchange for something, not just handing them out for free.
Vladimir Putin wants a fresh safety architecture
As the Financial Times notes, Putin's main ambition is to establish a fresh safety architecture that will give Russia a sphere of influence in Europe. Like the Yalta Conference, she did so for the USSR after planet War II.
"The situation looks much more favourable to Putin than at any point in the full war. If the U.S. unilaterally complete their support and exchange intelligence, Ukraine will find itself in a very hard situation," said Aleksander Gabujew of the Berlin Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center.
How does Ukraine respond to Donald Trump's proposals?
Kiev expressed its very clear position on peace talks. — Ukraine will not accept any peace agreements concluded between the US and Russia in its absence — passed Volodymyr Zelenski. He added that he did not want “all things to go with Putin’s plan” which would most likely not take into account Ukraine’s voice.
