Battle before RAI
The incidental occurred on September 3 outside the seat of the Italian public broadcaster RAI at via Teulada, Rome. Salvo Sottile was heading for a press conference dedicated to the fresh period of the "Ore 14" programme, which he became the leader. According to his report, the gathering with part of the investigative program “Report” turned into an exchange of offensive words.
Sottile told reporters that he only greeted his colleagues and did not provoke the incident. He confirmed that he had been insulted, and the insulting of his associate himself called a sad thing. He besides noted that the case was to verify the RAI. The consequence of this has not yet been presented.
The Italian paper "Libero" described dense vulgarism at Sottilego. "La Repubblica", citing ANSA's material, cited a more careful study by the writer himself on the censures and insults. These 2 levels of description must be separated: the fact of a verbal clash confirmed Sottile, while the detailed course remains the subject of an explanation.
The case goes to parliament
Sottili was sided with politicians of the Italian centre right. The Italian brothers called for a lower temperature of the dispute. Senator Forza Italia Maurizio Gasparri announced a parliamentary proceeding on events in the RAI. The public broadcaster has a work to explain whether the workplace has breached standards and how management reacted.
The dispute did not break out in a vacuum. individual changes are ongoing in the "Report", and the discussion around the program and its current host Sigfrid Ranucci has had a political dimension for months. The National diary has already described Italian right-wing allegations concerning ‘Report’ materials on Giorgia Meloni. The current unrest adds to this a conflict about the culture of work inside the sender himself.
Public media must be controlled
RAI is funded and protected as a public institution. Therefore, it must not obscure interior professional disputes with solidarity or political sympathy. If journalists who are professionally accounting for others out of work themselves exceed basic standards, management should establish the facts and present clear consequences. The same measurement must apply to all.
For the Polish reader, the Italian fight is simply a clear warning. Public media rapidly lose assurance erstwhile editorial factions begin to wage their own wars and politicians respond with further interventions. The credibility of the institution maintained by citizens is at stake. Without transparency, the public broadcaster becomes a battlefield for the environment alternatively of serving the community.
