Aviation Incident: Russian Military Airplane Violated Polish Airspace

On Tuesday, February 11, 2025, Russian military aircraft Su-24MR breached Polish airspace over the Gulf of Gdańsk. According to the information provided by the Operations Command of Armed Forces Types (DORSZ), the device flew to a depth of 6.5 km and resided in the Polish airspace for 1 minute and 12 seconds. The Russian authorities explain the incidental with the failure of the navigation system, but the situation was immediately detected by the radiolocation systems and appropriate action was taken.

Tuesday's incidental occurred at 14:09 in the east area of the Gulf of Gdańsk. The military aircraft of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, which took off from the Knight's Circuit, flew into Polish airspace, violating it to a depth of 6.5 km. The Russian device was located in Poland for 1 minute and 12 seconds before its course was corrected. The flight of the aircraft was monitored at all times by the military radiolocation systems of the Polish Armed Forces, and Polish on-call services supervising the airspace immediately made contact with the Russian side.

According to the information provided, the breach of the Polish airspace was confirmed by the Russian military, which explained that the incidental resulted from the failure of the Su-24MR aircraft's navigation system. After the intervention of the Russian Armed Forces navigator, the flight way was immediately corrected and the device left Polish airspace. The Operations Command stressed that the cast of the Polish air defence strategy continuously monitors the Polish airspace, providing its constant protection and immediate consequence to any threats.

Furthermore, Poland is simply a NATO member, which means that in the event of a threat to the safety of the country, the safety mechanisms of the alliance may be activated.

According to data from the Operations Command of Types of Armed Forces, in 2022 the Polish armed forces recorded more than 1000 hours of flight of military aircraft, an increase of 15% compared to the erstwhile year. Furthermore, the Polish military has more than 200 military aircraft, including F-16 and MiG-29, which are able to intercept Russian aircraft.

It is worth noting that the incidental of February 11, 2025 is another violation of Polish airspace by Russian aircraft. In 2022 more than 20 specified incidents were reported, representing an increase of 25% compared to the erstwhile year. The Polish authorities stress that any incidental of this kind is treated as a serious violation of the territorial sovereignty of Poland and poses a challenge to NATO's security.

Therefore, Polish armed forces are announcing an increase in safety of Polish airspace, including an increase in the number of military aircraft and air defence systems. Moreover, the Polish authorities plan to strengthen their cooperation with NATO allies in order to increase European security.
