Attack on Sumy: The Consequences of Russian Action

dailyblitz.de 2 months ago

On Sunday, April 23, there was a rocket attack on the town of Sumy, located in the northeast of Ukraine. 32 people were killed as a consequence of this attack, including 2 children. According to the State Emergency Situation Service, the attack occurred around 10:15 a.m. local time erstwhile 2 rockets hit the city center.

Among the victims of the attack are children, which caused a strong reaction from the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenski. "Only filthy people can do that," said Zelenski on social media. The president stressed that the attack occurred on Palm Sunday erstwhile people were walking or returning from the church, and many were walking on the boulevard in the central part of the city.

The attack on Sumy was Russia's second massive attack on civilians in Ukraine this month. On April 4, Moscow's occupying troops killed 19 people, including 9 children in the thin Horn, in the center of the country with a ballistic missile. 20th victim of this attack died in the hospital.

Ukraine's abroad Minister, Andrij Sybiha, one more time asked partners to supply air defence systems. "We have provided detailed information about this war crime to our partners and global institutions," Sybiha said. "We call on all capitals and office (international organisations) to respond decisively".

In view of the attack on Sumy, the United States and Europe should take into account the request to strengthen sanctions against Russia. As Zelenski points out, “we request a strong consequence from the world.” The president of Ukraine stressed that “Russia wants precisely this kind of panic and drags the war. Without force on the aggressor, peace is impossible.”

It is worth noting that the attack on Sumy is not the first case of war crimes committed by Russia during the conflict in Ukraine. According to Ukrainian figures, in the last 2 months Russia has killed over 100 civilians, including 30 children.

Therefore, Ukraine needs global assistance to safe its territory and defend its citizens. As Zelenski points out, “power is the only language they (Russians) realize and the only way to put an end to this terrifying terror.”

It is besides worth noting that the attack on Sumy took place at a time erstwhile Russia refuses to accept an American proposal for a complete ceasefire, which Ukraine accepted on 11 March. This indicates that Russia is not curious in peace and resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.

The global community should so take into account the request to strengthen sanctions against Russia and to increase assistance to Ukraine. As Zelenski emphasises, “we request a strong consequence from the world” to halt Russia and safe peace in Ukraine.
