Located on the south-eastern coast of the Balkan Peninsula, Bulgaria is simply a country classified as part of the alleged east flank of NATO. This is despite the fact that it borders almost exclusively on allied countries. To the south are Turkey and Greece, to the west of North Macedonia, and to the north of Romania. The only neighbour of Bulgaria not belonging to the North Atlantic Alliance is sympathetic to Russia Serbia. However, the classification of Bulgaria as an east flank is determined by its position on the Black Sea, and thus the possible danger of landing or breach of east airspace.
