Beijing has for many years been conducting a policy of 1 China, not recognizing Taiwan's independence, which Taipei itself formally never announced. Neither does the Republic of China formally recognise the vast majority of the world, outside the Vatican and respective another tiny countries. Taiwan is not officially recognised, but in practice it functions sovereignly, besides in the field of abroad and defence policy.
