Public media and any private media do not apply equal treatment to the parties in the discussion on abortion – says Antoni Szymanski, erstwhile senator, co-founder of the Pomeranian Pro-life Initiative. “They regulation information and broadcasts, presenting a number perspective, advocating a extremist extension of abortion opportunities, frequently aggressive,” Szymanski emphasizes.

Producing abortion on demand

The subject of abortion raises strong social emotions. But is it possible to debate this subject with respect for the opinion and dignity of people with different views? I am convinced that, yes, crossing borders, on this and akin issues, does not aid to establish rational dialogue.

Shocking in this context is the information given by Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamish in an interview with Radio RMF-FM dated July 19th. He stated that the offices of PSL MPs were under attack, who voted against the changes in the Criminal Code aimed, inter alia, at introducing an unpunished abortion on request by 12 weeks of pregnancy. We have learned that their parliamentary offices are covered in paint, hateful, and that support for this kind of action is expressed by any Members and Members of the governing coalition.

Social protests by nature do not make specified utmost behavior. For example, this year's Marches for Life and Family, organized in many cities where hundreds of thousands of people participated together – the most in Warsaw, Gdańsk and Szczecin. Despite very large manifestations, there have been no behaviours specified as paint-painting of parliamentary offices, belonging to Members with different views on respect for human rights and household values.

The left-wing Members declare that the draft amendments to the Criminal Code have been rejected, but they will submit it "until it is accepted." This is an announcement that does not respect the sovereign's decision, which is represented by democratically elected Members. This is so a blow to the democratic regulation of law.

If specified a precedent is reached, it may turn out that the various political environments whose draft laws or resolutions have been rejected will besides begin to make their losing proposals endlessly, which would bring serious demolition into the democratic decision-making process.

However, we have much more to worry about. The discussion on abortion has been going on for many months, but in mainstream media, it is almost entirely excluded those who are in favour of the current solutions protecting the life and wellness of women or the alleged abortion compromise before the 2020 Constitutional Court judgment. There are many more specified people in Polish society than in favour of projects aimed at abortion on demand.

This is confirmed by data from social opinion research, which has been systematically conducted by the Social Opinion investigation Centre since 1992. The last were carried out in March 2024. It follows that 63 % of respondents are against abortion on demand, e.g.: erstwhile a female simply does not want to have a kid (Research Communication No. 20/2024 p.5). Despite the fact that specified a vast majority of Polish society advocates the legalization of abortion on demand, in public tv programs or in any private stations, it is hard to see that people typical of this overwhelming group are invited to discuss this issue.

These media do not apply equal treatment to the parties. They reign over information and broadcasts, presenting a number perspective, advocating a extremist extension of abortion opportunities, frequently aggressive.

I wonder how people (often with advanced education fees) can feel about participating in programs where the discussion is conducted only among supporters or supporters of abortion? Is there truly a deficiency of experts and leaders who have a different view and frequently represent a large social environment? In a false aura of openness and tolerance, are they adequate to confirm their own views among their followers?

Finally, note the work of the Extraordinary Commission on 4 abortion projects. She organised a public proceeding in the Sejm, declaring that she wanted to hear voices from representatives of different backgrounds. Bravo! specified controversial projects are peculiarly worth consulting. However, erstwhile it turned out that the vast majority of the participants submitted were rational and factually critical of complex abortion projects, this was not utilized in any way.

The public proceeding was "faked off" and was ensured that it did not affect the substantive content of these projects, as evidenced, among others, by the draft amendments to the Criminal Code, late rejected by the Sejm. Even a associate of KO Roman Gierty wrote on Facebook: “There has never been specified a sloppy, unreasonable and even at any points threatening women, the bill. Not to mention that there has not yet been a task that would introduce specified a free American on abortion issues."

Worth and request to talk, but as Deputy Prime Minister Kosiniak-Kamish points out, with respect for people and their views. It is besides not possible to ignore in the media representatives of others, and especially large groups of society.

At the same time, the strengthening of their views by the usage of force and the escalation of social conflicts must be rejected.
