Russia's attack on Ukraine divided the global community. The coalition of states opposed to the Putin invasion is centered around the US. However, part of the planet remains neutral. India did not straight condemn Moscow's imperialist attitude. They play a game to defend their own interests.

Despite the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the economy of India continues to grow rapidly. According to the planet Bank report, in 2022 it counted nearly 7% growth. India is expected to become the world's 3rd economy over the next fewer years, giving way only to the US and China. The demographic data presented by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) assumes that India's population will shortly exceed China's population. Thus, the world's seventh largest population in terms of surface area will be inhabited, with much "younger" than Chinese. Powerful human resources together with a strong interior marketplace contribute to the systematic increase in the possible of Asian giant. India's increasing global importance means that the government in fresh Delhi must number on the mightiest of this world.

India and Russia – Partners by reason

For India, abroad policy has been shaped by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for nearly a decade. During last year's G20 summit, Modi called for peace to be restored. He urged the authorities of the Russian Federation and Ukraine to choose a way of diplomacy to end the ongoing conflict. India, unlike Western states, continues to import large amounts of oil at a reduced price from the Russians. According to the Prime Minister of India, the supply of energy resources should not be subject to any sanctions, and its country's energy safety affects global growth. India, buying large amounts of oil, refining it and selling it back to another countries with a large profit. According to Indian Ministry of Commerce and manufacture (as at February 26, 2023), during the period between April and December 2021 and the corresponding period of the following year, Russian imports increased from 6.58 billion to $32.8 billion. Russia became India's 4th largest economical partner. This situation allows India to become independent of oil mined in the Arabian Peninsula. In addition, inexpensive energy contributes to economical development. It is worth noting that trade between the 2 countries is based on a large imbalance. India imports a full of $4-5 billion a month. In the other direction, the goods are counted only in millions of dollars. A separate problem is the payment that the Russians will receive. Indian rupees lie in safes, and their exchange on ruble is virtually impossible. Despite the problems arising from the changeover, a April visit to fresh Delhi Deputy Prime Minister, and at the same time Minister of Commerce and manufacture of Russia Denis Manturov, announces the continuation of cooperation. The fresh free trade agreement will deepen relations. The Russians, thanks to machines purchased in India, will supplement the shortcomings resulting from sanctions imposed by Western civilization states after the beginning of aggression against Ukraine. The close relations between India and Russia are besides historical. During the Cold War, the russian Union was the main supplier of arms and military equipment for a state located on the Indian Peninsula.

India and Ukraine

The Ukrainian authorities besides spoke on Russian-Indian relations. India's visiting Deputy Minister for abroad Affairs – Emine Japarowa urged the Indian authorities to take their stand on the right side." She besides called for the anticipation of inviting the president of Ukraine – Volodymyr Zelenski to the September G20 summit, which will be held in Nowy Dehli. During last year's summit, the president of Ukraine participated in the event in a distant form. In December 2022 Zelenski spoke to Prime Minister Narenda Modi by telephone. During the discussion, he proposed a peaceful solution to the dispute with the Russian Federation and asked for support in the implementation of this vision. India took over the G20 Presidency in 2023. abroad Minister of India – Subrahmanyam Jaishankar expressed concern about the escalation of the conflict. In his opinion: "War serves no one's interests – neither its participants nor the global community." According to Sky News, Amitabh Kant, a typical of India in the G20, publically called for a focus on the global problem of utmost poorness affecting millions of people worldwide. Kant believes that the conflict in Ukraine distracts Europe from the far more crucial challenges facing the global community in the close future.

India, distancing itself from Russian aggression against Ukraine, is driven by pragmatism. The authorities realise that weakening Russia will strengthen China's position, which they see as the largest opponent in the region. At the same time, they do not deny the communicative imposed by the West. India's abroad policy gives them independency in making strategical decisions. Fearing the next economical crisis (the last was a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic) they did not adopt a policy of imposing sanctions on the Russian Federation. They decided to go their own way. It is worth remembering that Jawaharlal Nehru as then Prime Minister of India in the 1950s was 1 of the founders of the Movement of Uninvolved States, not claiming to be either side during the Cold War.
