Marc Fogel, an American past teacher detained in Russia in 2021, returned to the United States after negotiations led by the Donald Trump administration. Fogel served a 14-year conviction for possession of medical marijuana, but thanks to diplomatic efforts he was able to lead to his release. Upon returning to the country, he met Trump at the White House, thanking him for bringing him home.

Who's Marc Fogel?

Marc Fogel is simply a past teacher from Pennsylvania who worked at Anglo-American School in Moscow. In August 2021 he was detained at the Russian airport for possession of marijuana, which his household claimed he utilized for medical reasons. The Russian court sentenced him to 14 years in prison, which many considered disproportionately severe punishment.

Fogel spent years in a Russian penal colony while his household and American politicians fought for his release. His case was not as loud as the Brittney Griner basketball case, which was besides detained in Russia for possession of marijuana, but was released as a consequence of a prisoner exchange.

Negotiations and return to the USA

Donald Trump's administration conducted negotiations with Russia to lead to Fogel's release. Finally, an agreement was reached, although the details of the exchange were not disclosed. Michael Waltz, Trump's national safety advisor, confirmed that there was a "negotiated agreement", but did not betray what the United States had given in return.

After landing on American land, Fogel was photographed in the American flag, triumphantly lifting his fist. The White home published a photograph of his return on platform X, bearing the signature: “MARC FOGEL IS IN THE HOUSE!!! FULFILLED!!!’

Meeting Trump and household reactions

On his return to the United States, Marc Fogel met Donald Trump at the White House. He thanked him, calling him a hero. “I want everyone to know that I am not a hero. president Trump is simply a hero," Fogel said. He besides mentioned diplomats and politicians who sought his release.

Fogel's household besides expressed their gratitude to Trump. "Thanks to president Trump's unwavering leadership, Marc will shortly be on American soil, free where he belongs," wrote his relatives in a statement. They stressed that these 3 years were for them "the darkest and most painful period in life."
