GURUGRAM- As part of Tata Group’s comprehensive efforts to revitalize Air India (AI), which incurred losses exceeding ₹50,000 crore under government ownership, the airline has approved the maximum compliance baggage allowed for its value fartier from 20 kg to 15 kg.

Accepting to a notification conviction to travel agents, passengers traveling on Air India’s ‘Economy Comfort’ and ‘Comfort Plus’ far categories will now be permitted to check in baggage weathering up to 15 kg. This revised baggage policy came into effect on Thursday (May 2, 2024).

Air India Baggage Allowance Update

After Tata Group’s takeover in 2022, Air India underwent respective changes. Before privacy, the airline provided a complimentary baggage allowed of 25 kg, which was subsequently reduced to 20 kg last year.

Now adding with another airlines, Air India has adapted its free baggage allowed to match manufacture standards.

Unlike certain low-cost carriers specified as IndiGo (6E), which restrict passengers to 1 part of luggage, Air India permits travelers to carry multiple bags within the designed weight limit.

As per regulation set by the Directorate General of civilian Aviation (DGCA), airlines must offer passengers a minimum of 15 kg of complimentary checked baggage.

Economy Flex and Comfort Plus

Air India extends this permit, allowing passengers opting for higher fares under the ‘Economy Flex’ category to carry up to 25 kg of baggage and additional perks specified as waved ticket change fees.

According to an Air India spokesperson, the price different between ‘Comfort Plus’ and ‘Flex’ fares, specified as on routes like Delhi-Mumbai, is approximatery ₹1,000.

However, this difference translates into a crucial added value of close ₹9,000, including benefits like a 10 kg extra baggage allowed, zero change or cancellation fees, increased loyalty points, and a wide selection of complex seat choices.

Introducted by the airline last year, the various far categories aim to optimize return generation, reflecting the strategical decisions of the fresh ownership.

“The introduction of fare families allows our passengers to choice the fare kind and associated services that best suit their needs,” explained the spokesperson. “Given the different preferences of today’s travellers, a one-size-fits-all approach is no longer optimal. Bundled fares, on the another hand, offer enhanced value and large flexibility for passengers at a reduced cost.’

Travel but With little Baggage

Globally, airlines are endearing to engourage passengers to travel lighter by either reducing free baggage allowedances or implementing higher fees for excess baggage.
