Air Canada India-Canada Flights

As announced in May 2025, Air Canada (AC) introduced its Premium Economy Class on select Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A330 flights connecting India. This includes Delhi (DEL) and Mumbai (BOM), to Toronto (YYZ) and Montreal (YUL).

The cabin, designed for travellers seeking a balance between economy and business class, offers wider seats with greater recline, extra legroom, and a two-checked-bag allowance. This doubles the standard economy limit. Passengers benefit from priority check-in, boarding, and baggage handling, streamlining their journey through busy hubs in India.

The service enhances in-flight comfort with upgraded meals, including fresh salads, hot entrées, desserts, and pre-landing snacks tailored to route duration.

Each seat includes USB charging ports, in-seat power, and access to Air Canada’s entertainment system, featuring Bollywood films. Cabin crew fluent in Hindi and other local languages provide personalised service. They cater to the 1.2 million annual India-Canada passengers, per Transport Canada.

Arun Pandeya, Air Canada’s General Manager for India, emphasised the cabin’s appeal for those prioritising space and attention at a moderate price.

Strategic Market Positioning

The Premium Economy launch aligns with Air Canada’s strategy to capture the growing India-Canada travel market. The market is valued at $1.5 billion annually, per CAPA!

Operating 14 weekly flights from Delhi (DEL) and Mumbai (BOM) to Toronto (YYZ) and Montreal (YUL), the airline competes with Air India (AI) and United Airlines (UA). These airlines offer similar premium cabins.

The service targets business travellers, diaspora communities, and students. 60% of the passengers on these routes are Indian nationals, per IATA data. The service’s introduction, timed with India’s peak travel season, boosts Air Canada’s 8% market share on these routes. It challenges Air India’s dominance from New Delhi (DEL).

Operational Benefits

Premium Economy passengers at Delhi (DEL) and Mumbai (BOM) experience faster processing through dedicated check-in counters. This reduces wait times by 20 minutes compared to economy, per Air Canada (AC).

Priority baggage handling ensures quicker retrieval at Toronto (YYZ), critical for the 40% of passengers with connecting flights to Vancouver (YVR) or New York (JFK).

Broader Economic Impact

The Premium Economy rollout reflects a global trend, with 65% of long-haul carriers offering mid-tier cabins, per OAG.

Air Canada’s investment, costing $50 million for cabin retrofits, boosts its competitive edge against Emirates (EK) via Dubai (DXB), which adds 5 hours to India-Canada travel.

Air Canada’s expansion in India creates 200 local jobs, from ground staff to crew, per CAPA, while stimulating demand for connecting U.S. routes via Toronto (YYZ). By enhancing passenger experience, Air Canada (AC) positions itself for 10% market growth by 2027.
