But on the occasion of JPII he built the meaning and power of today's lying and harmful to freedom and thus our future hierarchical church in Poland. Adam Michnik says nothing about this.

I repeat: I realize and admit the meaning and function played by John Paul II on our way to freedom. I was a witness and a associate in this story. But if we want to learn from history, we should besides realize that the legacy of JPII (called "traditionalist" by Michnik) has built in modern Poland the position of a hierarchical church as it is and is now in an inextricable alliance with nationalist, anti-democratic, close authoritarian power, making it primarily a real threat to our freedoms and presence in the European Union. Adam Michnik mentions this in the margin and the thing is just as crucial as our conflict with real socialism and the power of monoparties in the 1970s and 1980s.
