"It has been decided that the products of companies supporting Israel will not be sold in restaurants, cafes and tearooms on the campus of parliament," says Reuters' statement.

On Monday morning Turkish parliamentarians noted that there were no more Coca-Cola and Nestle products on the menu. erstwhile asked about the reason, they learned that "the Presidency of Parliament decided to remove brands supporting Israel from the menu," the Turkish media informs.

Turkey supports Hamas?

The ban was introduced a period after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which caused the deaths of about 1,400 Israelis and the capture of over 200 hostages in Gaza. Israel responded with a complete siege to Gaza, including regular raids which according to Hamas-controlled sanitary authorities caused the deaths of more than 10,000 Palestinians within a month.

The decision to retreat the products was taken by the president of Parliament, Numan Kurtulmus, although the names of the companies banned were not disclosed. Reuters, citing a origin from the Turkish Parliament, revealed that it was about Coca-Cola and Nestle.

A society joined the action

It's not just politicians who boycott these products. On social media platforms, films appear on which you can see the people of Turkey buying cans and bottles of Coca-Cola, and then as part of the protest they spill their contents.

This decision was made in consequence to the increasing social tension. "The office of the talker of Parliament reacted to the outrage of the public and decided to retreat these products from the menu of the coffee store and restaurant in Parliament", he told Reuters' informant.

In view of Israel's ongoing attacks on the Gaza Strip, the Turks are increasingly in favour of boycotting Israeli products. Many public institutions and state-owned enterprises joined the campaign, says regular Sabah. Public institutions, local governments and universities in many provinces of Turkey have issued statements ensuring that they do not sale or service products imported from Israel in canteens.

No explanation

The Parliament's message contains no details on how Coca-Cola and Nestle would support Israel's war effort.

Last period Nestle reported that she temporarily closed 1 of her production facilities in Israel due to caution. This was the first specified reaction from the giant consumer product manufacture to the ongoing war.

Not just company boycotts

The conflict in the Gaza Strip has exacerbated political and social tensions in Turkey. Since 7 October, the Turkish authorities have powerfully tightened their attitude, which has been manifested in various ways: from calls for deescalation, by criticism of Israel's actions (and the US as a force exacerbating the conflict), to condemnation of Israel for alleged bombing of the infirmary in Gaza. Turkey's president made strong statements, and Parliament adopted an extraordinary declaration condemning Israel for attacking the hospital, backed by all political parties. Turkey announced a three-day national mourning and hosted the Hamas delegation in parliament.

There have been demonstrations for Palestine throughout the country, including in front of Israeli embassy and consulates and the US, as well as in front of American military bases in İncirlik and Malatyia. As a consequence of protests, Israel for safety reasons withdrew its diplomatic mission from Turkey and called on its citizens to leave the country – the US closed their consulate in Adan and recommended their citizens to be careful.
