The stories they sent to the Warehouse Contact refugees and refugees do not have a strong position in the media. For years there has been a communicative – fueled by politicians – about abroad invasions, threats, visa theft, taking jobs or proverbial beds in hospitals. It's hard for us to get back to empathetic and delicate and to scope these people. due to the fact that these people are frequently our neighbors, they live next to us. They try, despite very hard experiences, to function normally; to work and enjoy life. Sometimes they request support in the beginning, sometimes they just request to deficiency hostility.
Fragment of Inga Blatyska's past from Ukraine – First prize:
Every morning I make coffee, sit by the window and watch the sun emergence from above the mountains. My mom was sitting in that chair the another day. She barely saw anything, but the yarn – miles of thread, due to the fact that all the time since we got to Poland, she was just knitting and writing poems and memories. Sometimes she counted her eyes loudly: one, two, five, eleven, twelve...
Today I'm going to die," Mom said. "I don't know what to tell you, do what you want." She's never said that before – although she's already died twice. I got her out of that planet with a miracle...
What happened in the infirmary – I will not write. I guess everything had to look what it looked like. Long wait, dozens of IVs. They wouldn't let me stay with her last night. It hurt that Mom did not know Polish, and for the last 3 days of her life she heard only this language. She didn't want that end... There was besides physical pain.
But here’s what I thought, and I said: “Mom lived a long time. And she was alive a long time before we showed up. She had a good life. She was happy with us. And that's what matters. Just – it was important. Even the last year and a half in Poland – it was a happy time for her due to the fact that she barely saw the war.”
