There is simply a increasing debate in the medical community about the latest guidelines of the Ministry of Health, which presume that a woman's intellectual wellness threat can form the basis for legal abortion, confirmed only by 1 doctor.
Professor Łukasz Święcicki, psychiatrist and consultant of the Second Psychiatric Clinic at the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology in Warsaw, emphasizes that specified a decision should never be made by 1 person.
"Psychiatrists, unlike doctors of all another specialties, do not have any mostly accepted nonsubjective method of measuring wellness status. No appropriate blood test or ultrasound or another specified test may be performed. Any psychiatrist’s opinion can be challenged by even another psychiatrist”
– notes Prof. Święcicki.
For this reason, he stresses that the thought of a one-man opinion on this issue is not justified. In case of doubt, psychiatrists frequently call a consensus, comprising at least 2 psychiatrists and a psychologist.
The prof. points out that cases where pregnancy could lead to a deterioration in intellectual wellness are very rare.
"As a psychiatrist, I have met many very seriously sick people, including pregnant women, but I have never seen a situation where individual commits suicide due to it, although, of course, it is impossible to say that specified a situation never occurs. I have besides personally not met a suicide effort by a pregnant woman, but I have seen many future mothers who were very eager to take treatment just to be able to full care for the newborn.”
– he says.
The question of whether pregnancy can straight affect the intellectual wellness of a woman, Prof. Święcicki answers that pregnancy was formerly considered to have a affirmative effect on the intellectual state of a woman, but presently medicine considers it neutral. The exception may be situations where a female is pregnant with unwanted or prenatal defects.
"However, it is not for the psychiatrist to decide whether to discontinue specified pregnancy"
– adds the professor.
Prof. Święcicki is besides critical of the alleged "psychiatric message", which, according to any people, is abused as a way of circumventing the applicable law.
"It is hard to foretell a situation where the very fact of pregnancy and only him would origin a crucial deterioration in the intellectual wellness of a woman. I think the alleged “psychiatric message” must have any reason, but it should be utilized highly rarely, due to the fact that specified cases are acquittal”
He emphasizes.
In the face of cases where the patient reports that pregnancy poses a hazard to her intellectual health, the prof. points out that treatment, including psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy and adequate support, is needed.
"It seems absurd to me (...) that the only solution is to halt the pregnancy"
– says Prof. Święcicki.
The discussion on this subject is peculiarly crucial in the context of the increase in the number of abortions in Poland and increasing concerns that the psychiatric premise is abused. Experts specified as Prof. Święcicki emphasize the request for an individual approach to each case and the request for procedures to guarantee the objectivity and reliability of decisions.
Abortion is not considered a method of treating intellectual illness and there is no specified form of therapy.
It is essential to diagnose and treat the patient's intellectual disorders. Despite restrictions on usage of medicines during pregnancy, there are many safe antidepressants. Electroshocks are besides an effective alternative, which can importantly improve the intellectual state and let healthy delivery. In the case of leg pain, it is besides not recommended to amputate immediately, but to treat appropriately.
