A summit of European leaders was held in London on 2 March, focusing on the situation in Ukraine and European safety issues. The gathering was attended by European leaders, NATO Secretary-General and another high-ranking officials. Despite intense discussions, an agreement on a truce in Ukraine has not been reached. What are the next steps and what does this mean for Europe's future?

France and the United Kingdom without a truce agreement

In an interview with “Le Figaro” French president Emmanuel Macron revealed that Paris and London are proposing a monthly ceasefire in Ukraine that would apply “in the air, at sea and in the energy sector”. However, British minister Luke Pollard in an interview with Radio Times admitted that both countries had not reached agreement on the details of specified a truce.

“Paris and London did not agree on what the truce would look like. We work together with France and our European allies to think about the way to make lasting peace in Ukraine – Pollard said.

London Summit: What has been established?

At the London summit, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer proposed the creation of a "candidate coalition" to warrant the implementation of the peace agreement in Ukraine. Starmer stressed that Britain is ready to send its troops to Ukraine to guarantee compliance with a possible truce.

– In the event of a truce in Ukraine, the UK is ready to send troops and aircraft to guarantee compliance with the agreement," said the British Prime Minister.

In addition, participants agreed to proceed supporting Ukraine in both military and economical terms. "The UK, France and another countries will work with Ukraine on a plan to end the fighting, which we will then discuss with the United States," said Starmer. "We agreed that we would proceed military aid to Ukraine and exert economical force on Russia," he added.

Economic force on Russia and the future of Ukraine

The summit participants stressed that it was crucial to increase the economical force on the Russian Federation. Military support for Ukraine is to proceed and European countries have committed themselves to further cooperation in this area. However, the deficiency of agreement on a truce indicates difficulties in uncovering a common position among European leaders.

What's next?

Although the London summit did not bring a breakthrough on the truce, it showed the determination of European leaders to proceed supporting Ukraine. The next steps will depend on cooperation with the US and the ability to make a common position among allies. Europe's safety remains a precedence and Ukraine's future is inactive uncertain.
