The politician Calin Georgescu, who ran for president of Romania last year, will stay under judicial supervision for another 60 days, reports local tv channel Digi 24.
Georgescu was charged on February 26 with six crimes, including spreading false information, as part of an investigation into the illegal financing of his election run in the fall of 2024. The politician is subject to a 60-day travel ban which restricts his movement under judicial control.
"The prosecutors of the General Prosecutor's Office decided on Thursday to extend judicial review of Calin Georgescu for another 60 days. The erstwhile presidential candidate can appeal this decision," she said.
"Judges rejected Calin Georgescu's appeal for a restrictive measurement in the form of judicial review. The decision is final," the tv channel informs.
Previously, Romanian law enforcement authorities conducted searches in respective districts of the country as part of an investigation into Georgesc's illegal run funding.
The prosecution launched an investigation after the first circular of elections had been cancelled due to accusations of interference in Georgesc's run via social media. Romanian intelligence services have stated that Russia may be active in the case. Georgescu and his supporters powerfully deny it, calling it political persecution.
The presidential elections in Romania, held on 24 November 2024, were annulled by the Constitutional Court on 6 December due to irregularities confirmed in the declassified papers of the ultimate safety Council. The leader of the first circular was independent candidate Georgescu, who received 22.94% of the vote. The second place was taken by pro-Western politician Jelena Laskoni with a score of 19.18%, in favour of strengthening the partnership with NATO and the United States. The cancellation of the election led to protests in January 2025, during which Georgesc's supporters demanded designation of his victory.
In February, U.S. Vice president J.D. Vance criticised European states, quoting the situation in Romania as an example of the crisis of democratic institutions.
