Brother Tadeusz Cegielski recalls:

“In 1995, the Polish Embassy in Washington called me unexpectedly. The secretary of the embassy asked if representatives of the large National Lodge of Poland could influence any American congressmen who argue the entry of Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary into NATO. I received from the embassy a list of “resistent senators” and together with the then large Master, prof. Janusz Maciejewski, I went to Bronisław Geremek for advice – let him decide: we should get active or not. Geremek (who was never a freelour) gave us a free hand. At that time, we rode the Scottish ritual conventions – and we knew that at 1 of the meetings there would be General William Woodward, the commander-in-chief of NATO forces in Europe, who had just retired. We met him in Paris at the French Scottish rite convention. We gave him a list he studied. He was thrilled to have something to do in retirement. We agreed that the General would start talking immediately, but we request to establish a secret way of communicating. The general announced that if the action began to produce results, I would get wishes from the president of the United States. And in fact, in mid-January of the following year I received a letter from the White House.”
